I’m Kristine Cayne and I write romantic
suspense and erotic romance. I live in the Pacific Northwest. It’s not my
favorite place on earth, but the writing community here is wonderful.
How
did you decided to enter the world of writing?
I’ve always wanted to be a writer. But,
after completing a degree in British Literature, I knew literary fiction wasn’t
for me. It took me several years to find my way to genre fiction and romantic
suspense in particular. But once I did, I was hooked!
What
does your family think of your writing?
They are very supportive, for the most
part. The kids grumble that I’m always writing, and my husband claims that I
have a Facebook addiction. I know they’re proud of me though. My parents have
been great. Believe it or not, they’ve read both my Deadly Vices books. I told
my mother that she shouldn’t read my erotic romance, Under His Command, but she
said: “That’s the one you don’t want me to read? You know I will.” Gotta love
her.
Where
do you get your ideas?
My ideas generally spark from some real
world event or situation. As I begin to research the idea, a storyline often
comes to me and I go from there.
Can you tell us
a little about your book?
My
current work in progress is Under His
Command. It’s the first book in my Sex Alarm Sexy firefighter erotic
romance series. I’m working on edits now, and I plan to release it on December
17th.
What is your
writing process?
I
write the draft without editing it. However, I go over each scene with my
critique partner and adjust things as I go based on her comments. When I’m done
the first draft, I go back and put in all the edits from our scene reviews.
Then, I send the second draft to the beta readers. While they are working on
that, I’m working on adding more layers (emotion, body movement, setting, etc.)
to the story. When I get the comments from the beta readers, I incorporate them
and send everything to my critique partner (who is also an experienced editor).
She makes her comments. We go through the entire book several times, looking
for repetitions, improving word choice, tightening, and cutting. The final
check is for typos.
What
was the hardest part for you when working on your book?
Staying focused. I love writing. My characters
scream at me to put their stories on paper. But writing is difficult, and it
takes a long time. It’s easy for me to become distracted by other mindless
activities. As a self-published author, I also find promotion to be very
time-consuming. It can be fun, and it’s definitely necessary. But it takes focus
away from writing.
Kristine I can totally relate to being distracted by the time-consuming promotion, but we have to do it. What
influenced or inspired you to write?
It’s not any specific thing other than my love of
books. I’ve always read a lot. When I was a child, my father signed me up to
the Double Day book club. I also regularly purchased boxes of books from the
Scholastic Book Club at school. I visited the library each week. Still, I never
had enough to read. I’m still like that!
Was
there a scene that you didn’t add or you removed in your finished work?
Because words don’t always flow from my fingertips,
I had throwing them away. As a result, I’ve become fairly good at writing only
scenes that I need. That isn’t to say that I never need to pare a scene down. I
do. I tend to write long and in my first draft I have scenes that don’t end
where they should. But by my second draft, those have been fixed.
Part of a scene that never made it into my second
book, Deadly Addiction, is a scene that describes a particular bedroom
manoeuver for which the hero has become known. After re-reading it, I decided
that it sounded too much like a “how-to” manual and cut it.
Do
you have a favorite character (from you're book)? Why?
I
love all my characters. They are all unique and special to me and there is
something about each of them that I love. So, no favorites.
That's exactly how I feel about all of mine. They become your babies, lol. Do
you already know what to write next? Can you tell us?
Yes, as soon as Under
His Command is released, I’m starting the draft of Deadly Betrayal, the third book in the Deadly Vices series. I also
plan to try to parallel-write the second book in the Six Alarm Sexy series.
I’ve never written two books at the same time, so it will be fun to see how
that goes.

with wonderful readers. It always makes my day to hear from someone who’s read
one of my books.
