Elaine Raco Chase Radio Talk Show Host

Today I have the extreme pleasure of having Elaine Raco Chase visiting me.  Elaine is the host of The Author’s Corner on trianglevarietyradio.com.  She has an incredible blog radio talk show for authors.  Every Thursday night you can enjoy the amazing and interesting interviews with authors.

Thanks so much Patricia for having me on your blog…it was great to 'hear' you on the radio when we talked about your fantastic De La Cruz Saga.

Elaine I enjoyed talking to you on your blog radio talk show.  I hope that you invite me to visit again soon, lol (wink).  Elaine, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I've been a published author since 1978…(can I lie and say I was 10??!!!) probably not…I started writing during the 'heyday' of romance novels. I've also taught creative writing at many levels but mostly college/adult classes since 1980.  But I've been brought into elementary and high schools over the years, to excite kids on reading and writing.
Wow that’s amazing, how exciting to talk to the young children on the delights of writing.  How did you decided to enter the world of writing?
It was an accident – I graduated high school, but despite having a few scholarships not enough to cover college – I had wanted to be a lawyer.  But I enrolled in night school and took a course on programming computers then found a job at a TV/radio station programming the first automated computer system.  I soon learned that you just don't do one thing – and I began writing radio/tv shows, doing voice over's, then commercials.  You'd be surprised how much you can highlight in under 60 seconds to sell a product!
What does your family think of your writing?
My children were under the age of 5 when I began writing, as they grew and so did my career…I was very low key…no one really knew that I was a published author – until my second novel hit the romance bestsellers list then…  It was difficult for the kids and hubby…I use my real name and sometimes people assume all romance novels are porn.  We know that is not true…but kids and adults can be cruel. Now that everyone's grown-up – they avidly tell their friends to "buy my mom's books."  One fun item – my son found my Agatha Award nominated non-fiction book:  How to write the Amateur Detective Novel from Writer's Digest in the FBI Forensic Library in Quantico – he's in cyber security after being a federal agent.
Where do you get your ideas?
I usually play 'what if' – I also love to find odd things in newspapers and put them together for book plots – usually do that with my mystery novels.  For romance, I love reading horoscopes and creating people who match up.
Can you tell us a little about your book?
I was thrilled to get the rights back to all of my romance and mystery novels.  Best Laid Plans – which is a FREE download today from Amazon for Kindle was my first mainstream woman's story.  It is certainly a romance but with more chick-lit (that was not even a word back when I wrote it) than my regular romances plus it was a story of best friends realizing they had been in love for many years…again a popular theme now but not then!  It's a classic but updated in quite a few areas and an explicit read – the only thing I didn't want to update was the airplane incident – as it happened to me – now TSA back then and people could smoke on a plane!

I set it in New Orleans a city I fell in love with and visited more than half-a dozen times:

Meet Amanda Wyatt – she had an eight year plan and accomplished so much more. Attractive, talented, she was a success whether she was designing high fashion or running her own elegant shop in New Orleans. And she had a friend with benefits relationship with –

Lucas Crosse, her lawyer and the brother she never had for twelve years. He knew her intimately - well almost. Now, he's decided he wants that, too. And he's ready to fight for Amanda with –

Wade Lloyd. He entered Amanda's life by accident. Now he wants to be a permanent fixture. But can he handle her success? Can he handle Amanda? Can he handle her friendship with Lucas Crosse?

As for Amanda – she has choices to make. A new, exciting love? Or a best friend whose benefits she's begun to dream about.

What is your writing process? Research, research, research…until the characters become so real they talk to me…then layout the plot lines…then nose to the grindstone – well fingers on the keyboard.

What was the hardest part for you when working on your book? I'm a dialogue writer..so writing description is soooo hard…I either do not enough or too much…

What influenced or inspired you to write?
I have the imagination of a three year old.

Was there a scene that you didn’t add or you removed in your finished work? Nope – for Best Laid Plans…it's all there…oddly enough the fashions didn't need updating; the sex scenes are now more explicit/mature because writers weren't allowed to 'say that!' then…LOL!

Do you have a favorite character (from you're book)? Why?
I loved Amanda – she was so focused on her career, didn't take 'no' for any answer, easily developed friendships with everyone…and then wham…finally realized she wanted way more than being a buddy to her hunky best friend Lucas! But another man entered her world and Amanda had a choice!

Do you already know what to write next? Can you tell us?
I will trumpet! LOL!  I am so excited about Caught in a Trap – the erotic romantic comedy I'm currently working on.  It had maybe the funniest heroine in Kit Forrester – who has lied her entire life, mostly to keep herself safe.  And when she takes her first vacation ever – a cruise…and it sinks lower than the Titanic – well her girlfriends and co-workers don't want to hear that!  So Kit does what she always does – lie! Describes the hunky guy in an underwear ad, makes up a name from the gift bottles of Rum and an autograph from a kid and…creates her moonlight cruise fantasy lover - Rafe Morgan.  Just one problem – he exists. He's angry. And he wants answers!

Omg, Caught in a Trap sounds awesome!  I have to read it.

Do you have any last words?
I am so loving audio books! I have 6 of them out now, with 2 others coming any day…and 2 more in production…they are linked on Amazon to the ebooks, audible.com and iTunes….
One Way or Another was audible's top reviewed romance novel for October 2012; and Special Delivery was one of the top reviewed romance novels for all of 2012! (#4 out of 10!) It features dual narrators, original music and sound effects – for a completely different audio book experience – Destiny Landon and Lee James of Bella Czar productions also did Dare the Devil and the upcoming Double Occupancy!
And I am over-the-top with the response to the updated Double Occupancy – it's been on FB's fabulous Top 50 Books to Read after 50 Shades of Grey list for over 6 months!! No bdsm, just adult characters in an erotic romantic comedy.  All my original paperback novels have been updated, enhanced, expanded for ebooks unless they are posted as 'Classics'.

I hate? Friends who become 'toxic' – never sure why it happens but it does and I'm learning not just to me
I want to buy? Nothing…I was very poor growing up and instead of going crazy with 'buys' I have to push myself to buy almost anything that isn't a necessity …okay, maybe a lipstick…or two!
My favorite song is? Any love song by Elvis..yes, I know but his voice turns me into a puddle.
My favorite precious stone is? I love opals…despite their superstitions – they are a rainbow of colors…I have a gorgeous necklace given to me by my cousin from Australia…and I read they are good luck if given..but never buy one for yourself..so I figure I'm okay!
I want to travel to? Why? Calabria, Italy…where my father was from
I want to meet?  Why? Hillary Clinton and invite her to dinner…one on one… she's amazing… what she's done, how she's lived her life, how she handled Bill's indiscretion and continued to thrive.
I want to invite   -------------- to dinner. Why?
My dream is to? Okay, just like every author, would love to see one of my books become a movie
My favorite book is? That is a tough question…but the book that made me want to be a writer is an old classic: Green Mansions…it transported me out of Schenectady, NY and into the Amazon.

Hi RJ, it's awesome to have you visiting.  RJ can you tell us what inspired you to write your first book?

Unsolved Serial Killings was my first book and then Women Who Kill. I've always wanted to write while being an avid reader for about thirty-five years, but I don't have the imagination to create a fictional story. I've always enjoyed reading John Douglas books and thought maybe I can try to put together books that are not concentrated on one topic, or one murder, but a compilation of crime files.

TOP CASES of The FBI
What is the hardest part of writing true crime novels?

Gathering information. I've contacted the FBI and have been given quite a bit of information, as well from their archives. Some things get blacked out however. The FBI policy on extracting information is that you have to rephrase or edit every paragraph, or, every 40 words. If the perp is captured and sentenced, than court documentation is a great source and very explicit in detail. If someone is interested in writing, those are two avenues plus, contacting the local police station that investigated the crime and if the case is closed, they will give you a summary of the crime but not crime scene pictures unfortunately.

What is the most heinous crime you've written about?

Writing about school shootings. When I was writing No Killing in the Hallways, I was an emotional wreck. Being a parent of two teenage girls in school, and to research and write about what happened at V. Tech and Columbine, was emotionally draining.

Is there one crime that sticks in your head and heart and haunts you?

SERIAL KILLER SERIES Boxed Set (4 in 1)
My most memorable time was writing about Jeffrey Dahmer. The following is an excerpt from Case Closed: Serial Killers Captured and it broke my heart to write it, it haunts me every day:

“In the wee hours of May 27th, 1991, Konerak Sinthasomphone, fourteen, was discovered wandering naked on the street, heavily drugged and bleeding from his rectum. Two young women from the neighbourhood found the confused young boy and called 911. Dahmer chased after the boy to take him back to his apartment, but the women stopped him. When the police arrived, Dahmer told them that Sinthasomphone was his nineteen-year-old boyfriend, and they’d had an argument while drinking. The two women were not pleased and protested, but the two police officers turned the boy over to Dahmer. The police later reported a strange smell inside Dahmer's apartment, but did not investigate it. The smell was the body of Tony Hughes, Dahmer's previous victim, decomposing in the bedroom. The two policemen did not try to verify the boy’s age and also failed to run the background check that would have revealed Dahmer as a convicted child molester, registered sex offender, and still on probation. Later that night, Dahmer killed and dismembered the young lad, keeping his skull as a souvenir. Author Note: Officers Joseph P. Gabrish and John A. Balcerzak were fired after this incident but appealed and were re-instated.”

What authors or books have greatly influenced your own writing?

First and foremost, John Douglas is my favourite. Since I was a young boy, I always wanted to be an FBI Agent from watching the show at the time, The FBI starring Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. (who is 93 years young). I found out in my early teens that I couldn't be with the FBI because I was Canadian...what a disappointment, I still remember it. Getting back to John Douglas, I really enjoyed his books: Mind Hunters, Inside the Mind of BTK, Obsession, and The Cases that Haunt Us. He has other books, but those were my favourite and inspiration to write. Other great authors are: Peter Vronsky, Gary King, Brian King, Ann Rule and Jack Olsen, just to name a few.

Have you considered writing books in any other genres?
Nah. I'm well known as a true crime writer it would be hard to change now. I did however write a children's book for my grandson. It's his book for life. Hopefully it will pay for his education in twenty years as he's only three months old now.

Do you have any advice for fellow writers who are looking to publish their work?
I wrote my books over many years and had no intentions of self-publishing. I was holding out for a publisher and the book was going to be about 500 pages, called, Playpen to Prison. However, a friend and famous NY best selling author of over 80+ books convinced me to self publish in November 2011. I tell you, it's been a learning curve because I no sooner had the books up on other markets, when I retracted them all after Amazon announced the Select Program. It's been interesting and I have mixed views on this program. Self-publishing is definitely the way to go. Why spread the royalties around with agents and publishers? Like newspapers being replaced with the internet; paperbacks and hard copies are being replaced by digital format and it has only just begun. So I say, if you have a book to publish, get it edited and publish it yourself. You may want to think about hiring a narrator and publishing an audiobook. I have seven audiobooks through ACX and available on Audible, iTunes and Amazon.

What are your current writing projects?

I have a book called Killer Kids that I'm co-writing with another author. It should be published within a month. I'm also writing TOP CASES of The FBI (Volume 2). That book I'm hoping to have out by mid summer, again, in eBook, Paperback and Audio. I've received a proposal just today to co-write two books with a former FBI Special Agent. I think that will be a go. Just have to iron out some details. Then I'm hoping to produce a Serial Killer book on a more International scale.

Are you reading any interesting books at the moment?

I read everyday. Generally I read 3-4 books per week and I'm a Top 500 Reviewer for Amazon. I just finished “Reflection” by Kim Cresswell today. Excellent story, can't wait for it to be released and share with my fans and friends. I use to read a lot of the great authors like Lee Child, James Paterson etc., but now I only read Indie books. I try to support my fellow Indie authors by reading their books and reviewing for them. Another wonderful author who was an FBI Special Agent is Daniel Adams and I really enjoyed his book First Lady Down. His book President Down will be out later this month.

Something More, a Erotic Contemporary Romance by Ella Jade.

Blurb:
An affair and a shocking secret threaten to tear apart a rich and powerful family.

Claudia Samson, housekeeper to the privileged Callahan family, finds herself alone and pregnant after a brief fling with Gavin, the youngest Callahan son. When she informed him of the pregnancy he accused her of running a scam and made it clear that she was on her own.

Brody Callahan, Gavin's older half-brother, has devoted his entire life to running the family business. He doesn't realize what he's been missing by throwing himself into his work until he finds Claudia asleep in the family guest bedroom. He has discovered his very own Sleeping Beauty. Intrigued by the young woman, he vows to get to know her better.

Although Claudia is instantly attracted to the charismatic businessman, she knows her secret will destroy any chance they have for a future together, but Brody's awfully hard to resist.

Meanwhile, as Gavin watches Brody and Claudia's relationship develop, he begins to devise a plan to use the secret to his advantage. He wants full partnership in the business—something he was denied by both his brother and their deceased father—and maybe now he can finally obtain it.

Can Brody and Claudia survive the storm, or will the secrets and blackmail destroy both them and their love?

Content Warning: graphic sex and some explicit language

Excerpt:
When Claudia made her way outside, the limo was there, but the driver wasn't. She looked around, but didn't see him. She decided to get in and wait for him. He'd have to come back for the car sooner or later.

She opened the door and slipped inside, placing her bag on the floor. She was grateful the air conditioning was on in the car, another perk the bus didn't have.

"Hello, sweetheart."

"Brody?" She looked up and saw him sitting next to her. "What are you doing here?"

"I wanted to see you." He moved his arm around her waist and pulled her close to him. "I missed you." He freed her hair from her ponytail and shook it out with his fingers so that it fell down her back and over her shoulders. "Much better, princess."

She laughed because she had just thought of him as The Prince. If he only knew.

"What is it?"

"I'm happy to see you." She giggled. "You make things much better."

"Hard day?"

She leaned closer to him, took his face between her hands, and kissed him. At first, she moved slowly, but the way he looked at her with those smoldering eyes told her everything she needed to know. He was just as excited to see her as she was to see him.

She ran her tongue along his lips, begging for entrance. He eagerly accepted as he parted them and slipped his tongue inside her mouth. His breath was hot and his lips were hungry as he kissed her with more force than she expected. She moved her hands up and twisted her fingers in his hair, moving him closer to her.

He pulled her onto his lap, pushed her hair to the side, and kissed her neck. She could feel his excitement pressing against her hip. His erection was trapped between his stomach and her side. He shifted his hips and rubbed himself into her. She sighed against his mouth, but then he pulled away.

"Claudia." The sound of his voice was both desperate and breathless. "I could take you right here, but that’s not what I want."

"It isn't?" She didn't mean to sound disappointed.

"Let me rephrase that." He moved her to sit beside him. "I would want nothing more than to have my way with you right here, but I don't think either of us intended it to be that way between us the first time."

"You think about our first time?"

"Every second of the day." He shrugged. "I'm a guy."

She laughed, but realized he was right. She'd gotten carried away. It was the way he looked at her, the scent of his body wash, all spice and cinnamon, that drove her crazy.

"It's your fault," she said. "You're irresistible."

"I was thinking the same thing about you."

She shook her head and looked down. She felt his fingers on her chin in an instant, and then she was gazing into his eyes. She loved those blue depths. They were soothing and made her forget everything she had on her mind.

"You really need to take my compliments better. I speak the truth." He kissed her. "I'll keep telling you how perfect you are and eventually you'll believe it."

She would never believe it. A perfect woman wouldn't lead a man like Brody on. A perfect woman would tell him the truth. She was far from perfect.

Dreams Really Do Come True by Kameron Brook with Dirk Tyer

Hi Kamerone it's a pleasure to have you visiting  Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
Dirk and I have been together for seventeen years, married for fourteen of those. We have two wonderful kids, a preschooler and a newly turned teenager. Our days consist of typical mom and dad duties but when the kids are tucked into bed, that’s when we can let our hair down. Not literally for Dirk though since he lacking in the hair department. J
How did you decided to enter the world of writing?
We used to write for each other all the time - divulging fantasies. Dirk has quite a mouth and imagination on him. After a night of dirty talk, I again told him to submit something. He then sat down and completed “Voyeur”, sent it in, and was contracted days later. No joke!
For me - After much encouragement from him and Facebook friends, I took the plunge and submitted “Girls’ Night Out.” Another hit. Our next story, “New Beginnings” was our first collaboration and from there on out, we became a team in and out of the bedroom. (smiles)
What does your family think of your writing?
A couple people in our family know we write but not the genre. We truly believe they would frown upon it so we chose to keep that part of our life private.
Where do you get your ideas?
They are either from a dream or during one of Dirk’s dirty talk sessions. J
Can you tell us a little about your book?

“Dreams Really Do Come True” came about from a solitary picture provided to me by a friend. It showed two women embracing and from that, this sweet and short story emerged.
What is your writing process?
Neither Dirk nor I have a set schedule when we will write. If something pops into our head, we will open up the laptop and start typing or if the children are around, we will try to get it down that night.
Unfortunately our writing location is the same --- corner seat on the sectional. Yes, we battle for it and I usually win.
What was the hardest part for you when working on your book?
If we were submitting to our house, I would say word count limit. (6,000 for us)
In general, making sure we aren’t repetitive in word usage. “Felt” is an easy word to fall back on.
What influenced or inspired you to write?
Dirk is my inspiration. I love the effect my writing has on him. (wink, wink)
Was there a scene that you didn’t add or you removed in your finished work?
We intended Dreams to be short and sweet. It was our test story in the self-publishing world. So, no scene was added or removed. We agreed everything fit in the 5,000 read.
Do you have a favorite character (from you're book)? Why?
Oh how can I choose between two sexy women? Impossible. (winks)
Do you already know what to write next? Can you tell us?
We are currently working on two short stories. The first centers on a sexual bucket list, which will have oodles of sex scenes in it (M/F/F, M/M, and M/F/M). The other will be a M/F/F of a female friend who comes for a visit and becomes their third in the marriage. Oh and we have a story coming out February 17th, “Sinfully Delicious” (M/F).
Where can we find more information about you and your books?

Do you have any last words?
I want to thank you for graciously taking time out of your day to chat with me. As always, it’s a pleasure. For those who have read one or more of our stories, thank you. For those who haven’t, I hope you’ll consider giving us a go. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.  Thank you Kamerone for sharing your work.  Please visit again.
